The Friends of Door County Libraries will present a “Cheese-licious” Book & Author event on Thursday, August 15. “Wisconsin Cheese Cookbook” author Kristine Hansen will be joined by a Who’s Who of Door County cheese for a discussion and complimentary sampling, 7 p.m. at the Kress Pavilion/Egg Harbor Library, 7845 Church St., Egg Harbor. Free and open to the public.
As a prolific free-lance writer, Hansen has written on food, design and travel for such publications as Architectural Digest and Travel & Leisure. For the cheese cookbook, published in March (Rowman and Littlefield), she visited 28 creameries across the state, including the Door County establishments that will participate in the Kress event: Renard’s Cheese, Sturgeon Bay; Door Artisan Cheese and Wisconsin Cheese Masters, Egg Harbor; and Door County Creamery, Sister Bay.
Hansen will talk about her experiences writing the book, and each of the cheese representatives will offer insight into the background and operations of their businesses. Renard’s for instance, has been a family-owned Door County landmark since 1961 and produces some 2 million pounds of cheese a year. Since opening its doors in 2017, Door Artisan Cheese has been recognized with numerous prizes, including recognition at the World Championship of Cheese and U.S. Championship Cheese contest. Wisconsin Cheese Masters opened more than 10 years ago as a showcase for the edible craft of the state’s most accomplished cheesemakers – graduates of an intense, advanced education program. And Door County Creamery produces a range of goat milk products, including cheese and gelato, from their own herd of more than 125 goats. An opportunity for audience Q&A and complimentary cheese sampling will follow the program. Copies of the Wisconsin Cheese Cookbook will be available for sale/signing, courtesy of Peter Sloma of Peninsula Bookman.
The Friends of Door County Libraries has presented free Book & Author programs for more than 15 years, featuring authors of a wide range of fiction and non-fiction titles.
